DSB Scandia 1966 2nd class coach B, Blender model
Created by Darren Wilden (dwinnovation.dk) · Version 1.0 · November 2026 · Licence: CC BY 4.0 (commercial use allowed, credit required)
A detailed, real-scale model of a Danish State Railways 2nd class compartment coach, type B, built by Scandia in 1966, in the red DSB livery. It is the kind of coach that ran behind the MZ diesels on Danish main lines. It is made for close-up rendering in Blender Cycles, with all ten compartments, the corridor and both toilets modelled inside, and every window made of real glass.

How the model is built
The scene has one collection, DSB_Coach_B, with these
parts:
- Body: one lofted body shell with rounded roof ends, closed by flat end walls, with crisp cut window and door openings.
- Roof: the grey roof, ten ridge ventilators over the compartments and the raised roof housings over each end.
- Glazing: aluminium window frames with transoms, rubber gaskets and real glass, clear in the compartments and corridor and frosted in the toilets.
- Doors: the four entrance doors with their windows, handles and step wells.
- Ends: the rubber UIC gangways with their top rolls, the double-leaf end doors, bridge plates, tail lamps with red glass, corner niches with the cable sockets, headstocks, buffers, screw couplings, brake hoses, entrance steps, grab rails and corner skirts.
- Bogies: two bogies with wheelsets, axleboxes with coil springs, swing bolsters, swing links and dampers.
- Underframe: the floor pan, body bolsters, equipment boxes, air reservoir, tanks, brake and main reservoir pipes and the electrical conduit.
- Interior: ten 2nd class compartments with grey cloth seats, brown wing headrests with white covers, armrests, luggage racks, curtains, heater grilles and fold-down bins; the corridor with its wall lining, guard rails and sliding glass compartment doors; two toilets with basin, mirror and toilet; the vestibules and the interior lights.
- Decals: the DSB lettering, data text, door indicator lamps, pictograms, labels and door stickers.
- Cutters: hidden helper objects that the Boolean modifiers use. Do not delete them, or the windows, doors and end openings will lose their shape.
- A ground plane (
ENV_Ground, in theEnvironmentcollection) to stand the coach on.
Using the model
- Rendering: press F12 in Blender to render the
active camera.
CAM_Compartmentlooks into a compartment; the interior lights are already set up. - Moving or posing: select everything in the
DSB_Coach_Bcollection and move it as one. Keep theCuttersobjects in the same place relative to the body. - Night scenes: raise the strength of the interior
lights (the
LIGHT_Intobjects) so the windows glow, as in the dusk render. - Changing the livery: the paint is in the body
materials. The lettering and other markings are separate objects in the
Decalscollection, so they can be hidden or replaced. - Other software: use the FBX or GLB in the
exportfolder. In both exports all modifiers are applied and the hidden helper objects and the ground plane are left out. - Game engines: the model is made for rendering. For real-time use, reduce detail as needed, for example on the seats, bogies and underframe.
Accuracy and known simplifications
The model was measured on a dimensioned side and plan drawing of the type and checked against photographs of the real coaches, including matched cameras for the coach ends. Some details could not be measured and are reasoned estimates:
- The underframe equipment on the compartment side mirrors the corridor side, which is the side shown on the drawing.
- One corner niche and tail lamp per end are seen in the photos; the other corner is built the same way.
- The roof ventilator widths, one ceiling lamp per compartment and the toilet fittings are estimates of the right size.
- The small data text and labels are stand-ins of the right size and colour, because they are not legible in any photo.
- The lettering uses the Liberation Sans typeface as a stand-in for the original DSB lettering.
Source scripts
source_scripts/ contains the Blender Python scripts that
generated the model, numbered in build order (00_setup.py
to 08_decals.py, with mzlib.py as the shared
helper library). 09_cinematic.py builds the farmland scene
for the renders from the author's Vectron scene and renders the
cinematic shots. They are included so you can study and reuse the
techniques. They were written for the author's own folders and reference
images, which are not included, so they will not run unchanged. You do
not need them to use the model.
