DSB IC3, Blender model
Created by Darren Wilden (dwinnovation.dk) · Version 1.0 · November 2026 · Licence: CC BY 4.0 (commercial use allowed, credit required)
A detailed, real-scale model of a complete three-car DSB IC3 diesel trainset (DSB class MF), set 11 with the cars MFA 5011, FF 5411 and MFB 5211, in the light grey and navy DSB livery with the red DSB logo. It is made for close-up rendering in Blender Cycles: the rubber-framed fronts, the snowploughs and couplers, the Jacobs bogies, the roof equipment and both driver’s cabs are modelled part by part, and every window is real glass.

How the model is built
- Body: one continuous shell per car with crisp cut openings for the windows, the passenger doors and the cab side doors, the light grey paint, the navy window band, the grey skirt band and roof, and the two thin orange first-class stripes at the MFA cab end.
- Fronts (both ends): the black rubber cushion frame around the flat cab front, the windscreen with its frame, gasket and wiper, the head lamps and red tail lamps with their chrome rings and bezels, the cab lamp above the windscreen, the red DSB logo and the set number, and the metal snowplough with its wear strip, brackets and side plates.
- Couplers: the automatic coupler at each end with its cone, cover, contact boxes, hose, lever and labels.
- Sides: real glass in every window with the window gaskets and reveals, the double plug doors of the passenger entrances with their grab rails, the cab side doors, the destination displays, the DSB logos, the car numbers, the door pictograms and the small labels.
- Roof: the grey roof with the wells and their grilles, the exhaust pipes with soot, the fan pits with their guards, the roof capsules with louvres, the horns, the mast and the smaller roof fittings.
- Underframe: the side skirts with their grilles, the two nose bogies and the two Jacobs bogies with frames, wheelsets, brakes and track brakes, the joints between the cars, and the stencils on the underframe.
- Cab interior (both cabs): the driver’s desk of the later digital fit-out with its screens, the instrument pod, the overhead panel with its modules and lamps, the corner and side cabinets with their racks, the window lining and blind housing, the inside of the cab side doors, the floor and the back wall with the door to the passenger saloon.
- Cutters: hidden helper objects in the
IC3_Helperscollection (MFA_RingRecessCutter,MFA_BodyRecessCutterand the same for the MFB) that Boolean modifiers use, and further hidden cutters in the other collections. Do not delete them, or the openings and recesses will close.
Using the model
- Rendering: press F12 in Blender to render the
active camera.
CAM_Cab_Alooks into the MFA cab from behind the driver’s seat. - Moving or posing: select everything and move it as one, so the hidden cutters stay in the same place relative to the body.
- Lights: the lamp glass and bulbs are separate
materials (
IC3_LampBulb,IC3_LampRedLED), so you can add emission to light them, as in the dusk render. - Other software: use the FBX or GLB in the
exportfolder. In both exports all modifiers are applied and the hidden helper objects are left out. Glass becomes a transmissive material, and paint whose colour is made by node logic is given its average colour. - Game engines: the model is made for rendering. For real-time use, reduce detail as needed, for example on the cab interiors, the couplers and the bogies.
Accuracy and known simplifications
The model was measured on the DSB 1:100 drawings of the three cars (side, plan, roof and front views) and checked against camera-matched photographs of the real sets. Details that could not be measured are reasoned estimates:
- The passenger saloons have simple stand-in interiors (dark seat blocks, luggage racks and ceilings) that are only meant to be seen through the windows.
- The under-floor equipment between the bogies is represented by simplified boxes.
- The cab follows photos of the later digital fit-out. The driver’s seat is a simplified shape, the screens show no images, and the controls on the right-hand desk are simplified.
- The small labels are stand-ins of the right size and colour where they are not legible in any photo.
